The Pull List #05

The Pull List: Your Weekly Blerd Culture Comic Roundup 🔥

What's good, fam! Welcome back to another edition of The Pull List, where we're looking ahead at some promising drops that have caught our attention. This week's selections are giving me that same anticipation I used to feel waiting for new Toonami episodes back in the day – you know that feeling, right?

Air Force Ones #1 (Wingless Comics)

The title alone speaks to our culture's intersection with both streetwear and mecha anime, and I'm here for it. When I first read about a character named Nasir "Nas" Williams piloting a mecha called Yasuke, my heart skipped – the layered cultural references aren't lost on me. Like how Samurai Champloo bridged hip-hop and feudal Japan, this series seems poised to blend our love for anime mechanics with grounded Black narratives. The premise of resistance against a floating world of privilege? That's the kind of metaphor that hits different when you know the history.

The Magic Order 5 #3 (Dark Horse Comics)

Following Cordelia Moonstone's journey reminds me of those late-night conversations about consequences and redemption. While I haven't cracked this issue yet, the premise of dealing with the aftermath of black magic feels particularly relevant to discussions about power and responsibility in our community. Looking forward to seeing how this narrative reflects larger themes about the price of power.

ThunderCats: Apex #1 (Dynamite)

Reimagining ThunderCats through a western lens? The creative audacity alone has me intrigued. As someone who grew up watching the original series and debating Lion-O's leadership style with my cousins, I'm curious to see how this interpretation speaks to contemporary themes. The mysterious rider concept gives me strong Afrofuturist western vibes – think "The Book of Eli" meets "Into the Badlands."

All-New Venom #1 (Marvel Comics)

We're likely in for something special with Al Ewing at the helm. The mystery of the new host has me thinking about identity and masks in superhero narratives, which resonates particularly deeply within the Blerd community. The promise of a "fun-loving" Venom is a fascinating contradiction we must explore together.

These picks represent what I'm most excited to dive into this week. But real talk – the best part of our community is sharing these discoveries together. Drop by your local comic shop, grab what speaks to you, and let's build on these stories together.
