My Favorite Entry Titles for LitRPG
Cover for The Land: Founding by Aleron Kong

Hey Everyone!

For nearly a decade, I've been immersed in the world of Literature Role-Playing Games (LitRPG), and today I'm excited to share some of my all-time favorites. While I initially planned to rank these series, I quickly realized each one brings something too unique to the table for simple comparison. Instead, I'm highlighting the stories that have truly stood the test of time - the ones that showcase just how imaginative and compelling this subgenre of fantasy can be. Whether you're already a fan or just curious about where to start, let's dive into some must-reads!

He Who Fights With Monsters by Shirtaloon

Status: Incomplete                              Books in Series: 12

This series introduces us to Jason, a laid-back Australian who finds himself transported to a world where magic is reality. From the moment he arrives, we're thrown into the action - no slow build-up here. What follows is a masterful balance of intense combat sequences and rich world exploration, complete with intricate politics and fascinating characters.

While the magic system might seem daunting at first glance, it unfolds beautifully, showing that true power comes from dedication and effort rather than innate talent. Currently dominating the genre's bestseller lists, this series captivates readers with:

  • A cast of supporting characters that feel incredibly real
  • A perfect blend of high-stakes action and everyday moments
  • A witty protagonist who's not afraid to challenge the status quo

Mayor of Noobtown by Ryan Rimmel

Status: Incomplete                                 Books in Series: 7

The phrase 'make sure to do your puma check' has become legendary in the LitRPG community, and it all started here. After an untimely death, Jim finds himself appointed as the mayor of Noobtown in a world called Ordinal. His arrival story? Far from your typical isekai transport tale.

I can't count how many times I've had to stop reading in public because I'm laughing too hard. But don't let the humor fool you - the stakes are very real. Jim constantly fights for survival while forging alliances (and making enemies) with the most unexpected beings. This series proves that even in life-or-death situations, there's always room for a good laugh.

Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman

Status: Incomplete                          Books in Series: 7

Another humorous entry into the genre with a more apocalyptic pretense for Earth as a whole. We meet Carl, a man who seems to be having the worst luck in his life, and it doesn't seem to be getting any better when an alien invasion comes to Earth with destruction in mind in the form of systematic exploitation of the world residents all for: A game show. While this might seem a little underwhelming, I urge you to stay with me.

The reader learns that this game show spans the known universe and is anything but friendly entertainment. Carl and his talking cat companion, Princess Donut, must now depend on one another for their very survival while also making sure to be entertaining for the people who hold their fate in their hands. This series provides a very good balance of humor, violence, and action.

The author, Matt Dinniman, gives Carl an endearing personality of a guy who just seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, all the time, but is able to adapt quickly and use his situation to his advantage. Toss in weird powers, an AI system with a mild foot fetish, and a guide with a drinking problem and you are in for one hell of a ride. I will note that this is one series that I have exclusively listened through audiobook and I am a better person for it, because the effort that the voice actors have put into each and every character has taken my enjoyment of the series to the next level.

Welcome to the Multiverse by Sean Oswald

Status: Incomplete                             Books in Series: 6

My most recent discovery might just be one of the most compelling. This series caught my attention with its fresh take on apocalyptic themes and unique premise. Meet Silas, a would-be college student who discovers his late uncle was part of the 'Forerunners' - Earth's representatives in an interplanetary competition to prevent humanity's extinction.

The story moves at an excellent pace, with Silas developing his powers rapidly while juggling the fate of his family and, oh yeah, the entire world. What really stands out is how author Sean Oswald handles power scaling - even as Silas grows stronger, the challenges grow proportionally, creating constant tension. It's a sobering reminder that even with incredible power, you can't save everyone or be everywhere at once.

Chaos Seeds by Aleron Kong

Status: Incomplete                             Books in Series: 8

No LitRPG list would be complete without the series that earned its author the title 'Godfather of LitRPG.' For many of us, including myself, The Land was our gateway into this amazing genre. Following Richtor, a man tricked into extraordinary circumstances, the series masterfully blends harsh realities with fantastical elements.

What sets this series apart is its accessibility - the power system scales naturally with character development, making it easy for readers to follow along while maintaining suspense. Richtor's journey feels earned; every bit of power comes through hard work and learning from often painful mistakes. The world-building shines through intricate race dynamics and a nuanced approach to fantasy tropes that helped establish many genre conventions.

Final Thoughts

When I was looking for series to include on this list I generally went the categories of interesting main characters, well-developed and curiosity-inducing side characters, and power balance with even pacing of the scaling of power. Now, I have read way more series than what is included on this list however, if I were to give ‘entry points’ for diving into this genre, I think this list relatively represents a good balance of most of the elements people find when exploring the genre.

I don’t mean to snub or shrug off any other good series (and feel free to flame me later in the comments) but again, personal preferences. I would like to note that this list only includes completed works that can be found for purchase in their entirety whether in physical print or through virtual means. I sincerely hope that this list was able to peak or spark some interest into a genre that is still developing over time. I invite you to at least try one book in one of these series, and if I am able to convert at least one person to this world of reading well then I consider it a job well done.
