Indie of the Month: [Redacted]

The roguelike genre is a dime a dozen and with Supergiant Games setting the bar considerably high with Hades and Hades 2 in early access, gamers have been trying to get their fix of destroying multiple enemies and strategically navigating biomes.

Enter [Redacted], the latest game from Striking Distance Studios, who brought you the survival horror game The Calisto Protocol. Going away from horror and leaning more into an action top-down shooter, [Redacted] follows the unknown breakout of monsters at Black Iron Prison, and while all the monsters and mutated prisoners are running amuck, you, a lowly guard, must make their way to the end of the prison and grab the last escape pod out of there.

There is one catch: several other people are going for the same escape pod. You must fight your way through different areas of the prison, but speed is key as you must race the likes of a half-man, half-zombie accountant, a therapist, an obsessive DnD player (listen, these are actual characters), and a Karen. In the event they are too far ahead, you have the ability to slow them down or harm them in order to maintain an advantage. That being said they can also do the same for you.

Redacted Review - Higher Clearance Level Required

Though the variety of weapons isn't as vast as others, there's just enough for you to try to master along with different suits from an increase of HP or a Speed Buff. It still maintains a high-octane feel with chaotic violence, and every single run does not feel the same, especially given the fact that every prison guard that dies, a completely different one, shows up to take their place in their quest to escape the prison. The controls are easy to pick up but preferably on the controller, and the mayhem does not let off the gas the second you step out. And the art fits the theme of playing a graphic novel from the cutscenes to the smoke spraying from the pipe.
